Accentuate the Positive !

In an effort to emphasize the positive behavior we want to see in our boys and girls, we are implementing a new behavior plan at MIS. The behavior plan uses a Student Awareness Report (SAR) to allow our students to monitor their behavior. We have high hopes that by emphasizing the positive behavior we see from so many of our boys and girls, others will come to understand that following the rules, using their time in school for learning, and showing respect for other people is much more rewarding. Listed below are some of the main points of SAR.

• On Monday mornings each student will receive a SAR (Student Accomplishment Record)
for that week. The SAR is a chart listing the behavior concerns our staff feel are the most
important in order to have a productive day at school. Each one of these concerns has been
assigned a certain number of points, depending on how important we feel it is.
• The students will keep the SAR in their binders (third grade teachers may tape them to the
desks instead) and will be responsible for subtracting the assigned points for any area where
they’ve had a problem that day.
At the end of the week, each student will tabulate his/her weekly total and turn the SAR in to
his/her teacher. The teacher will check the SAR for accuracy and it will be sent home in the
communication folder the next Tuesday. It’s very important for the parent to sign it and send it
back the next day, because 5 points will be deducted for each day it is late, and if the SAR isn’t
back to school by Friday, the student will receive no points for that week.
• Students who earn 90% of the possible points for the week will receive a privilege or
reward for that week and earning 90% of the possible points for a nine-week period will
result in a “larger” activity. You may see what these weekly and nine-week activities are
on the back of this letter. The students who have maintained 90% of the possible points for
the entire year will be invited to go to the Hollywood Theater to see an age-appropriate
movie.
